Taylor Swift packed the ‘Patient Zero’ music video with Patient Zero Easter eggs from the opening frame, debuting the visual during the MTV VMAs in Los Angeles, where she also received the first-ever Artist Director Honors Award, according to AJC.
The song is one of four new tracks on ‘The Life of a Showgirl: Encore’, also per AJC. So there was a lot riding on the video. Swifties, predictably, got straight to work.
The Emmys sketch that gave the whole cast away
The biggest Patient Zero Easter egg had been hiding in plain sight for weeks. During a Law & Order sketch at the Emmys, Swift delivered the line: ‘I think what we’re gonna be looking for is hiding in plain sight: Saccharide Aries from the vineyard north or south.’ At the time it sounded like courtroom nonsense. In retrospect, it was a full cast breakdown.
Swifties decoded it piece by piece. Colin Farrell is linked to ‘saccharide’ through his role in Sugar. Matthew Stafford is an L.A. Rams player, and Aries is the ram. Cara Delevingne’s surname is Old French for ‘from the vine,’ covering ‘from the vineyard.’ Dakota Johnson maps neatly onto ‘north or south,’ the two Dakota states. The four of them all appear in the video. A separate fan also noted the Law & Order framing was itself a hint the video would lean into crime.
Stafford’s involvement carries an extra layer: according to E! Online, he was among the guests at Swift and Travis Kelce’s July wedding, which makes his cameo feel less like a casting call and more like a favour between friends.
He was not the only athlete in the video. ABC7 Los Angeles reports that Jarret Stoll, a former Los Angeles Kings center and two-time Stanley Cup champion, also appears in the video alongside Stafford.
The Patient Zero Easter eggs fans found in the tombstone scene
Away from the cast, the video’s tombstone scene drew a lot of attention. Swift creates a grave for herself, a move fans clocked as her second time doing so: the first was in the ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ video in 2017. Beside the tombstone sits a wedding photo of Swift herself, which prompted one fan to note it may be the closest thing to a bridal image we get, given no photos from the real-life July 3 wedding have surfaced.
The dates on the stone read 1986 to 2022. Swifties noted that 6 is 9 upside down, so 1986 echoes Swift’s actual birth year of 1989. The character who dies is 36, which is Swift’s current age. Whether that is grief, dark humour, or both is left to the viewer.
Swift herself flagged one Easter egg, writing on Instagram that the grey house in the video ‘was a metaphor for the coldness of a relationship that’s faded and atrophied.’ She also outlined what drew her to the video’s genre mix: ‘I wanted to incorporate elements of gothic ghost stories, true crime, psychological thrillers, all in a setting I hadn’t really shot in much.’
Where the Easter egg habit comes from
Swift spoke to The Washington Post in October 2022 about why she has kept the Easter egg tradition going for so long. She traced it back to poring over CD booklets as a child, particularly a Chicks album whose photos depicted every meaning of the word ‘fly’. When she was 15 and putting together her first album, she wanted to recreate that sense of discovery for her own fans by encoding lyrics with hidden capital letters. ‘That’s how it started,’ she said, ‘and my fans and I have since descended into color coding, numerology, word searches, elaborate hints, and Easter eggs. It’s really about turning new music into an event for my fans and trying to entertain them in playful, mischievous, clever ways. As long as they still find it fun and exciting, I’ll keep doing it.’
Given the volume of theories already circulating about the Patient Zero Easter eggs, it is fairly safe to say they still find it fun.
