The Robert Pattinson Suki Waterhouse relationship has unfolded almost entirely away from the cameras, which, given that both of them are British and both of them clearly cannot stand fuss, should surprise nobody. First linked in July 2018, the pair have spent eight years carefully rationing what the public gets to see, and yet the drip-drip of sightings, red carpets and the occasional interview has built up into quite a story.
How It All Began: Mamma Mia and a Long Night at Soho House
The first confirmed sighting came on 30 July 2018, when E! obtained photographs of the two kissing in the streets of London. They had been to a 9pm showing of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again at Electric Cinema in Notting Hill, then walked across the street for drinks at Soho House until 1am. An eyewitness told E! that Pattinson ‘was very affectionate to her and had his arm around her the whole way.’ By August, a source was still describing things as ‘casual,’ noting Pattinson ‘isn’t looking for anything serious right now’, though the same source admitted the two ‘are definitely into each other.’
For the first several months they were spotted at London clubs, Christmas parties on Regent Street, and hiking trails in Los Angeles. Breakup rumours surfaced in September 2018; LaineyGossip knocked them down, reporting Pattinson had been FaceTiming Waterhouse from a London pub. By October, a 2:15am exit from Chiltern Firehouse together put paid to any lingering doubt.
In January 2019, Waterhouse (born 5 January 1992, according to Wikipedia) marked her 27th birthday with Pattinson photographed leaving her party. A couple of weeks later, People ran photographs of them holding hands after a run in London. The relationship, whatever it had been in August, was clearly something more.
The Robert Pattinson Suki Waterhouse Relationship Goes Public, Slowly
Pattinson made his first public comments about the relationship in April 2019, when The Sunday Times asked him about Waterhouse. His response was characteristically guarded: ‘If you let people in, it devalues what love is.’ He drew a line between ordinary affection and the version photographed by a hundred people, ‘the line between when you’re performing and when you’re not will eventually get washed away, and you’ll go completely mad.’ The Sunday Times got the philosophical version. The public got the hand-holding photographs.
The pandemic, perversely, gave the couple a little more texture. In a June 2020 GQ cover interview, Pattinson essentially confirmed he had been quarantining with Waterhouse, describing her as ‘his girlfriend’ in the London apartment the Batman production had rented. By October 2020, an E! source said the two had ‘discussed getting engaged but are in no rush,’ adding that the relationship was ‘stronger than ever’ after quarantine.
In February 2023, Waterhouse spoke to The Times more openly than either of them had managed before. ‘I’m shocked that I’m so happy with someone for nearly five years,’ she said, adding that they had both grown up in south-west London (she from Chiswick, Pattinson from Barnes) and found it almost improbable that they had ended up together. ‘We always say that I never, ever would have thought I’d go out with a boy from Barnes,’ she said. She also offered a glimpse into daily domestics: ‘Rob definitely isn’t getting advice from me about acting, but of course I’ll try and get him to help me with an audition before he falls asleep on the sofa.’
She had hinted at wanting children in that same interview. ‘I can’t wait. I wish you could click your fingers to make it happen.’ Less than a year later, she was performing at Mexico’s Corona Festival in November 2023 with a visibly pregnant stomach, telling the crowd, ‘I’m not sure it’s working’, about the sparkly dress she had chosen to distract them.
Their daughter arrived in early 2024. Pattinson confirmed the birth at the Dior Homme show in Paris that June, telling a reporter, ‘She’s so cute. And you know, I’m amazed by how quickly their personality comes. So even at three months, I’m like, “Oh, I can kinda see who she is already.”‘ By January 2026, he was telling GQ that being away from her for more than ten days was ‘physical pain,’ and that she had watched ‘so many’ of his films, with a preference, he joked, for Mickey-17 over Cocomelon.
The nickname their daughter has settled on for him is, it turns out, ‘Daddy Batman.’ Waterhouse revealed in a July 2026 podcast appearance that their two-year-old had started recognising both parents’ jobs. As for Pattinson, ‘she calls him “Daddy Batman” now because he’s always dressed up like that now for the next seven months whenever he’s on FaceTime’, a reference to his filming of The Batman Part II.
In May 2026, Waterhouse told Variety she could see the Robert Pattinson Suki Waterhouse relationship going further still, saying she wanted ‘maybe a larger family, like max two more kids. That would be cool.’ The most recent chapter came in September 2026, when Waterhouse joined Pattinson at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Primetime (their first-ever appearance together at Venice) with Waterhouse in a Saint Laurent gold lace set and Pattinson in a striped white Dior suit.
