Widow’s Bay season 2 is confirmed, the writers’ room is already at work, and the show just made Emmy history, so there is rather a lot to catch up on. Here is everything currently known, with spoilers for season 1 ahead.
Fourteen Emmys and a Broken Record
The show collected 14 awards at the 2026 Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Outstanding Supporting Actress. According to Extra, that haul broke the record for a comedy series in a single season, surpassing the 13 wins The Studio claimed the previous year. The breadth of the wins matters as much as the number. Deadline reports that Betty Gilpin won an Emmy for a guest role, and the show also landed statuettes for music supervision, production design, sound editing and mixing, music composition, casting, and cinematography.
Apple TV’s head of programming Matt Cherniss, who announced the renewal in June 2026, was effusive about the team behind it. ‘From the moment audiences arrived in Widow’s Bay, they’ve been hooked on every eerie mystery, unexpected laughs, and cursed secret that Katie, Hiro [Murai], Matthew, and the entire team have created,’ he said. ‘It’s become one of those shows everyone’s talking about, and we’re thrilled to see audiences continue to embrace it. We can’t wait to return for another season.’
The series, which ABC News reports premiered in April with new episodes released weekly through June, follows Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis of Widow’s Bay, an island town off the coast of New England where the supernatural is not a metaphor. It is a very literal problem.
What Widow’s Bay Season 2 Is Working With
The season 1 finale left the island’s curse very much unresolved. It emerged that Evan, Tom’s teenage son, is the final descendant of Richard Warren, the man who struck the original deal with the island’s evil force centuries ago. Warren believed the haunting would end when his bloodline did. Tom now knows that his own son is the last link in that chain. He threw a heirloom brooch connecting the family to the Warrens out to sea, and then heard the church bell toll, reportedly the island signalling how many souls it wants to be satisfied.
Creator Katie Dippold, in an August 2026 interview with Collider, laid out where her attention will go in the next run. ‘Definitely want to have way more Bechir. Kevin Carroll is a great actor and he’s so funny. Definitely want to see some Jeff Hiller, Dale, point of view,’ she said. ‘Absolutely some more Rosemary backstory. So that makes Season 2 so fun in the room.’ Director Hiro Murai, meanwhile, singled out a character on the margins: ‘I have a real weird soft spot for Garrett (Fred Robbins), the lighthouse worker. I don’t even know if he says much in the first season, but I just think he has a really rich full life that we don’t know about, and I’m looking forward to hearing from him a little more.’
The expected returning cast includes Rhys as Mayor Loftis alongside Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Neil Casey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root. Jeff Hiller was promoted to series regular in August 2026.
Timeline: Writing Now, Filming Likely in 2027
No premiere date has been set. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, Dippold confirmed the writers’ room had assembled and that the team had been working on the show for roughly two weeks at that point. ‘It’s a great room, and then we’re going to be writing for the next 20 weeks,’ she said, adding that she is hoping they will start filming in 2027.
Dippold had also told Vulture she wants the show back ‘as soon as possible’ and that there is ‘no reason for it to be more than two years,’ with the possibility of it arriving sooner. Kate O’Flynn gave the most specific indication of a shooting window in a September 2026 interview with ScreenRant. ‘I know it’s hopefully March time, I think, we might be filming season 2,’ she said, while noting she does not know anything else about it.
As for what comes after season 2, Dippold floated the idea of spin-offs at Comic-Con, comparing potential standalone stories set in the island’s past to bottle episodes of Apple TV+ fare and her earlier work on Parks and Recreation. ‘Creatively, that sounds very fun to do,’ she said, though nothing has been formalised. For now, the writers’ room is the focus, and Dippold’s stated aim is that the 20-week writing period keeps the gap between seasons as short as possible.
